Why do PAT testing?

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
Many PAT testing companies will tell you that it is a legal requirement to have all electrical equipment pat tested.
This is not the case, as it is not a mandatory requirement which actually makes it a bit of a grey area.
The truth is although its not a legal requirement, if you where to have a fire which was found to be caused by a faulty piece of electrical equipment and you failed to keep adequate electrical maintenance records you will find your insurance may be VOID, making any claim against your insurance impossible.
Another important point is that if there was to be a death in the workplace caused by a faulty piece of electrical equipment and you failed to keep adequate electrical maintenance records then the health and safety executive will hold you fully responsible and you could find your self looking at a court case.
